Monday-Friday Point Quota Group (MFPQG)

2007-08 Season  -  Membership Guidelines

1.  MFPQG is a group of men formed from the members of Gulf Harbour Golf and Sports Club members.  If a Sports member, or a club member’s guest, wishes to play they must pay Gulf Harbour Golf Club the regular fees and adhere to the club rules concerning the number of plays per month.  A guest of a member is welcome to play with the MFPQG.  However, guests will not be asked to contribute, nor will they share in the cookie portion of the game.  Accordingly, a blind draw will be given the team that has a guest.  If one team has two or more guests, that team will not participate in the cookie portion of the game.  Guests do not have to pay annual dues.  Men playing in the MFPQG for the first time, or that did not play in the previous season, are required to meet with a committee member for a guideline orientation familiarization session prior to playing with the group.

2.  MFPQG is organized and run solely by volunteer members, not the Gulf Harbour Golf shop.  Current committee members are:  John Veracka, Chairman of the Board – Bob Corley, President – Rick Langman, Vice President/Secretary - Lou Passaro, Treasurer –  Mike Carpenter, Social Director – Joe Johnson, Quota Director,  – Ken Williams, CH95 & Website Director, Steve Muench Tee Time & Pairing Director – Jack Weaver Posting Director.

3.  The form to join the MFPQG is found on page 3 of this document. Before joining and playing with the group, players are asked to submit $35.00 annual dues, complete the registration form, and submit to the Treasurer. When

completing the registration form you are asked which tees you wish to play from for the year, your club number, your email address, if you elect not to be a Captain, and your preference to play early (before 9:00 AM), or late (after 10:30 AM).  The after 10:30 playing preference will only be used when the total number of players is large enough to justify both an early and a late group.  Or, you may also sign up to play either early or late at the discretion of the person doing the pairings.  Please complete all appropriate blanks on the registration form.

4.  To signup to play any particular day;  clip boards with Monday and Friday signup sheets will be placed on the cabinet shelf between the TV and the scoreboard in the men’s locker room, one week prior to the play date.  The signup sheet will be removed at 12:00 noon two days before the day you wish to play. (noon Wednesday to play Friday and noon Saturday to play Monday)  Requests to play received after above times will be placed on the standby list and will be included as slots open, but are not guaranteed that they will be included.  As a last resort, you may email “gulfharbourPQG.com” with your play request.  Requests to play with specific persons in the group will not be honored; however, guests of a member may play with that member.

5.  The group plays most Monday and Fridays from October through May at Gulf Harbour when the course is open for play.  Any gentlemen Gulf Harbour member (Golf & Sports) is welcome to play and become a part of the group.  The 18 hole game is played by USGA rules using a point quota modified Stableford format.  Points are earned on each hole as follows:

A bogey (1 over par) yields   1 point

A par yields                           2 points

A birdie (1 under par) yields   4 points

An eagle (2 under par) yields  8 points

A Double Eagle (3 under par) yields      16 points.

6.  Point Quotas for new members, and members who have not played with the group the previous season, is established by the committee as follows:  The individual’s current USGA Gulf Harbour index is rounded to the nearest point and then subtracted from 36, that difference is taken; 3 is then added if a person’s index is 10 or less, or 5 is added if a person’s index is more than 10.  Example:  An index of 15.6 is rounded to 16 then 16 is subtracted from 36 = 20, plus 5 = 25 point quota.   Thereafter, each member’s daily point total attained is recorded and used to establish their future point quota.  A formula, including the first time calculation, will be used to calculate their quota until they have posted 6 scores.  After playing 6 games, the best 6 played will be averaged for their quota until they have played 10 games.  After playing 10 games, the eleventh score replaces the oldest score recorded, thus using the last 10 games played to figure an individuals point quota.  Thereafter, the 6 best scores are averaged and used as their point quota.  A new member, or a member who not has played with our group in the previous season, is not eligible to win the individual award until he has recorded points attained while playing 6 rounds with the MFPQG.  Thus, they are eligible to win individually on their seventh game.  They can share in the team winnings beginning the first day of play.  Members are required to have a minimum point quota of 6 points per 18 holes, regardless of handicap.

7.  The team pairings and tee times will be posted on our website “gulfharbourPQG.com” and on Gulf Harbour Community Channel 95 by 8:00 AM the day prior to the day of play (Sunday for Monday play and Thursday for Friday play). Cancellations must be made within the same timetable.  If for any special reason (sickness, etc.) you cannot play, you need to immediately email play@gulfharbourPQG.com, or call Bob Corley (481-7500), as soon as the situation arises.  You are asked to PLEASE check CH95 or the website each Thursday and Sunday after 8:00 AM, to see if you are listed to play in error.  If you are, immediately email “play@gulfharbourPQG.com” or call Bob Corley.  “NO SHOWS” cause the MFPQG volunteers, as well as fellow teammates, undue hardships.  After pairings are posted should you have a question concerning pairings, tee times, being left off roster, or are on the roster in error, immediately call Bob Corley (481-7500) before 8:00 PM the day before play, or the golf shop on the morning of play (433-3015).  Your consideration will be appreciated by all!  Special announcements will be placed on CH95 and our website.

8.  Captains will be assigned for each foursome on all play days.  The Captain will be the first person listed on listings and postings of play notifications.  Teams and tee times are made up by a random draw.

The Captain is in charge of that Team and is responsible for the following:

·        Make sure players are playing from proper Tees.

·        Collecting 7 cookies required for play prior to first teeing.  (Players please bring the correct # of cookies with you.) Cookies are non-refundable after play is started.

·        If for any reason should a player quit during a round, his 7 cookies shall be retained and his score shall become a blind draw.

·        Keeping, totaling, signing and having the scorecard attested.

·        Making decisions on rules and questions during play.

·        Prompt submission of both the completed card and cookies to the Locker Room and designating a representative to accept the individual or team’s winnings when the winners are announced.

·        Making sure all team members putt out all putts for points, regardless of length - yes, the 6” ones.

·        Monitoring team members play according to USGA rules.

·        Pace of Play.   (If a player cannot make a point, have that player pickup, if your team is not within one shot of the foursome in front of your foursome.)

9.          a.  If you are placed in a threesome you will be given a blind draw for the fourth person.  - A three player team’s blind draw shall be determined by the average of the points for the three players on that team.  The front nine over/under points for all three players shall be added together and divided by 3 (the number of players).  The total of that averaging shall be the amount entered as the blind draw score.  Any fractions shall be rounded up or down to the nearest ½ point.  (i.e. 1/3 = ½ point   2/3 = ½ point)  The same shall apply for the back nine score.  The 18 hole blind draw score shall be determined by same averaging procedure as explained for the front nine.

b. If a twosome plays, they have a choice of two options prior to teeing off.  1. They may elect not to play in the cookie game.  2. They may play in the cookie game and will need a blind draw.  The blind draw for twosomes will not come from within the twosome.  The two blind draws, 1 each, shall come from two foursomes that are finished with scores posted on the board, closest to the twosome within their own blue or green group.  For twosome blind draws each player’s name selected to be in a blind draw shall be written on a separate slip of paper and the drawing shall come from those named slips of paper.  Team members, including persons drawn as blind draws for both twosomes and threesomes will equally share any awards.

10.  All participants, except guests and those mentioned herein, are required to donate 7 cookies daily to play.  Pay out after play for the day is made to the team that exceeds their point quota by the most points as follows:

Front nine –      pays out 2 cookies out of the 7 collected per player                                    Back nine –       pays out 2 cookies out of the 7 collected per player

Total 18 –          pays out 2 cookies out of the 7 collected per player

The other 1 cookie of the 7 is paid out to the individual player who exceeds their point quota by the most points.  Should a tie occur, the cookies will be split between the tied teams or individuals. The announcement of winners is held in the men’s locker room immediately after the last foursome finishes play.  A designated representative for the winning team must be present to accept the winner’s cookies.  (The designated representative does not have to be from the winning team.) If a designated representative of the winners is not present to claim the winnings at the awards presentation, those cookies shall revert to the MFPQG general fund.

11.  Members may either play #2, #3 or #4 tees as they select when paying dues for the season.  If a member played from a different tee the previous year, their point quota will be adjusted accordingly.  Once the tee determination is made it will not be changed for the season.  Players with a special situation (health) are eligible to request committee approval to play from different tees.  On Mondays, foursomes will be random and mixed with members playing from the different tees.  On Fridays, foursomes will be paired by tees with #2 tee players together, #3 tee players together, and #4 tee players together, on a best effort basis.

12.  When there are 8 or more Teams signed up to play on any given day, the Groups will be split into two playing groups, blue and green.  When there are less than 8 Teams the game will be played all in one Group.  With two groups there will be two pay offs, one for blue group & one for the green group, in the manner explained above.

13.  If a person has been sick, injured or has suffered a disabling condition and wishes to play, they may elect to not use their score to count for individual or team cookie prizes.  However, they must decide this before they tee off and they must pay the 7 cookie entry fee.  If they finish 18 holes their score will be recorded and their position on the team will be treated as a Blind Draw.  If their team wins cookies, they will share in those winnings.

14.  Since the game cannot be finalized before all Teams have completed play the committee recommends that all players play READY GOLF.  The attached sheet contains tips which will help Captains and players to speed up play.  Please read these tips and follow them when playing.

·        Please be considerate of your fellow MFPQG members.  The slowest group dictates the pace of play for everyone behind them.  Any group that gets out of position -- will affect all the groups after it.

·        Captains, it is your responsibility to keep your team up with the group in front of you – not to just stay in front of the group behind you.  Please make sure your team plays Ready Golf.

·        Captains, please total and balance the scorecard after finishing the first nine holes of play.  Then, prior to finishing the last nine, pre-total the card and balance points.

“READY GOLF”

At Gulf Harbour, our optimum “Pace of Play” for 18 holes is approximately 4 hours or less for a foursome.  Our goal as players is to be aware of our positioning on the course and how it relates to the players behind your group.

  • Each golfer must do their part to maintain their position relative to the group ahead – not behind. In an effort to maintain your position on the course and keep golfers behind from having to wait - play ready golf.  Pace of play can be boiled down to two simple phrases:  1. BE PREPARED.  2. BE READY TO PLAY.   Not maintaining your position due to slow “Pace of Play” is typically due to bad golf habits that waste time on the course.

·        Golf is a thinking game…..While riding to your ball, use the travel time to begin thinking over your next shot, the yardage, the wind direction, which club you'll use, and so on.  Begin preparing for your next shot before you get to your ball.

  • Each member of a foursome (or any group size) should proceed directly to his or her ball. The group should not travel as a pack, going to first to one ball, then the next, and so on.  The first player ready to hit should do so if the player with honors is not ready.
  • After teeing off, decide which player will hit their second shot first and drive to that ball first.  While the first player prepares to play, the other player drives to their ball, plays their shot, and proceeds to pickup up their partner, who is already walking to his next shot.
  • If a player loses a ball - that player should hunt alone for the ball while the rest of the group continues to hit their next shot.  If after hitting their next shot, the lost ball player has not found their ball, they may help him hunt for no more than 1 minute.

·        Never hold up play because you are in the middle of a conversation.  Put the conversation on hold, take your stroke, and then continue the conversation when no one is hitting.

·        Leave your clubs, towels, etc., to the side of the green, and in the direction of your cart or the next tee, never in front of the green.

  • Another trick to faster play is to hit your shot, get in the cart with club in hand and proceed to your ball for your next shot before putting your club back in the bag.

·        On the green, begin lining up your putt and reading the break as soon as you reach the green.  When it is your turn to putt, be prepared to step right up and take the stroke.  Then, putt continuously until you have holed out, unless another players’ line restricts you from doing so.

·        When parking your cart to go to the green always park on the cart path behind the green in a position that gives you the shortest distance to walk to the pin.

  • Do not practice putting after you have finished the hole.
  • The first player to hole out should pick up the flagstick and be ready to put it back into the hole when everyone is finished putting.
  • Please move to the next tee before you mark your scorecard, not by the green so the group behind you will not hit you or have to wait.
  • If you feel the 4 hour “Pace of Play” is too fast, then we recommend that you play golf at a time play is lighter (later in the afternoon is best).
  • After playing ready golf and using the above tips your group is still lagging behind, then common golf courtesy and etiquette should prevail as follows:
    • If the group in front of you gets over 1 hole ahead of your group, and if the group behind you has been waiting to hit, use either option 1 or 2 as follows:

1.      Allow faster player to play through.  To avoid felling “rushed” let the group behind you play through.

2.      Pickup, move to the next tee and forfeit that hole.

Practice Good Habits, Play Ready Golf and Enjoy!
